This Week on the Farm 3/9

By admin|March 9, 2012|Information

It was another busy week of planting and building! We finished planting the third variety of leeks and planted the parsley. The onions are looking fantastic and we are going to start fertilizing them on Monday. We use an organic fertilizer that is made up of pulverized fish. It sounds gross (and smells worse), but it does an excellent job of providing nutrients to our growing crops.

Other crops that have germinated include scallions, leeks, and celery. The scallions are doing much better than last year’s variety. I think it helped that we changed the type of flat that we are growing them in. Germination is much more even with the new flats. The celery is my favorite. The first signs of growth look so delicate, like little palm trees; plus the celery makes a contrast from all of the straight shoots of the onions, leeks, and scallions.

Our greenhouse build last weekend was awesome. We started with a clear cement pad and by the first evening we had all of the hoops and one of the five purlins up. On Sunday we were able to get the remaining purlins up and put in the cross bracing. Thanks to all of our family for coming out and helping us. There is no way that Tyler and I could have done it on our own. Click here to check out our facebook page for more photos of the build!

This weekend we are hoping to finish building the end walls and cover the house in plastic. If we are able to get all of that done, Tyler and I will be able to install the electrical and the furnace next week. We are getting a 500 gallon LP tank put in on the 19th and will be able to run all of our greenhouses off of the one tank.
